Riding the Ferries

Riding the ferries across the Puget Sound is one of my favorite things to do in Seattle.

For about $6 you can walk onto a ferry and travel to Vashon Island, Bainbridge, or Bellingham. Anywhere you go is an adventure! If you want to take a day trip, pack a lunch and head on out. You only have to pay departing Seattle, it’s free on the way back.

Most of the Ferry rides last about 30-45 minutes, watching the water pass you by you can usually spot some jelly fish and the occasional seal. I’ve seen porpoises as well, and there’s always that slight chance you may see a whale or two!

Puget Sound Scuba

Yesterday I had the privilege of going on my first scuba diving experience in the Puget Sound. While the visibility wasn’t amazing, I can truly say I’ve never experienced anything like it. The amount of crabs I saw was incredible, but the colorful anemones were probably what took my breath away the most. It’s interesting to think that this entire world under the surface exists even with all the hustle and bustle going on just 40 ft above. The word that comes to mind is serene. Under water there’s no hurry, and there isn’t much to worry about, life goes about fairly calmly. Of course, there are the occasional spurts of energy. I watched an octopus’ tentacles reach out of an old pipe and wrap around a crab held in my instructors hand. I’ve never seen anything like it.

The Puget Sound is home to octopus, wolf eels, jelly fish, crab, anemones, whales, and yes the occasional shark as well. But the diving here is absolutely incredible. If you ever get the chance to go, don’t pass it up.

Crime down in Pike’s Place has inspired local celebrity chef Tom Douglas to create a “clean up” fundraiser. How? By cooking salmon.

“If you’re going to Hawaii, you have to go to a luau,” he said. “If you’re going to Seattle, you have to go to a salmon bake at Steinbrueck Park.”

Spring has Sprung

The Skagit Valley Tulip Festival is always a beautiful site. With thousands upon thousands of flowers in bloom the countryside rivals the beauty of a rainbow, and with more shades of color than a rainbow will ever have it beats it out as well.

While Skagit sounds like a ways away the drive up is totally worth it. Take a day trip, explore the valley, enjoy spring in the Northwest.

Check out the ECS songs here.

A recent experience of mine: the Seattle Sounders have taken this city by storm! Thousands of people gather in pioneer square hours before the game even begins in order to rally the troops and cheer on their team. It’s amazing how so many people can come together with a common purpose. People who have never met before, people who probably wouldn’t even get along with one another if they were there for any other purpose. But the fact that you’re wearing green and I’m wearing green practically makes us family. Chants of “SEATTLE!!!” is followed as the rest of the crowd replies “SOUNDERS!!!”.

Team owner and funnyman Drew Carey says a few words, silencing the crowd, and as he finishes people erupt in applause, the marching band begins to play and the march to the match begins!

But behind the mass of green clad fans, a new crowd gathers. They’re known as the ECS (Emerald City Supporters) and they are the reason the Seattle Sounders have such a large fan base. The best way i can describe them is an orderly mob. They sing in unison songs that could strike fear into the heart of any opponent. As they march down the street you can hear their battle songs. Each of them covered in green paint and sounders gear, these are the die hard fans. The people who make games 100 times more exciting.

At the game they set up speakers so everyone sitting in the ECS section can hear them. They coordinate their chants and their voices fill Qwest Field. Some appropriate, some… let’s just say not appropriate. But either way, they rally the entire stadium. Their excitement is infectous, the entire crowd feeds off of the energy they emit.

As a soccer player myself I can imagine how good the Sounders must feel, hearing thousands upon thousands of people cheering solely for them. It must be nerve racking, but at the same time just hearing that many voices yelling for them must give them the upper hand.

The Seahawks are known for their “12th man” campaign. But I have a feeling the Sounders may take that campaign over pretty soon. Either way, it suffices to say that Seattle has the best fans in the US.
